In Parliament this week: Ceta, data protection, drones

The free trade agreement between the EU and Canada and the future of the EU's trade policy will be debated by MEPs this week as committees are meeting. On the agenda are issues such as a data protection agreement between the EU and the US, aviation safety rules to meet new challenges such as drones and the ongoing investigation into the Panama papers.

MEPs have another busy week ahead of them

The international trade committee debates the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (Ceta) between the EU and Canada on Thursday. The agreement will need to be approved by Parliament before it can ultimately enter into force. On Wednesday the same committee discusses the future of the EU's trade policy with trade commissioner Cecilia Malmström, World Trade Organization Deputy Director-General Karl Brauner and experts from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, OECD, UNCTAD and other organisations.


On Thursday the transport committee votes on new EU aviation safety rules to make sure that standards fit the challenges of increasing air traffic, including the need to better regulate drones flying in Europe.


The civil liberties committee debates on Tuesday draft recommendations for an umbrella agreement on data protection between the EU and the US setting out when national authorities on both sides exchange personal information relating to the prevention, investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crimes, including terrorism. MEPs will need to approve it before it can entry into force.


Also on Tuesday, the Panama papers inquiry committee questions commissioner Vera Jourova, who is responsible for the EU’s anti-money-laundering policy.
